Often daring, always innovating – Scotsgay Magazine

PUNCH UPS

I’m available as a commissioned writer, editor and dramaturg and have been known to take occasional side jobs punching up other people’s scripts or stand-up slots. I love doing that and often manage to open up space within the thinking of other artists to elevate their work. Sometimes though, they just tell me to fuck off.

I’ve been writing professionally for about 25 years now. My first paid gig was for Merlin Entertainiment, writing several of the shows that featured in the debut season of the Edinburgh Dungeon in 2001. Many of those scripts are still in rotation and I kick myself daily for my failure to understand IP at the age of 25.

Since then though, I’ve cut my teeth as a screenwriter providing treatments and fully realised scripts for summer film schools funded by local authorities across Scotland. I worked as a Cultural Coordinator for Fife Council and Artist in Residence for East Lothian Council which created many opportunities for me, including my first high profile writing gig, War Detectives – a short film commissioned as part of a collaborative research project through the Scottish Government and installed in the Imperial War Museum in London from 2003-2008.

My most current writing credits however include Now I Know You’re Mine, Unicorns on the Road and Jock Tamson’s Bairns (all supported by Creative Scotland), Paisley Radicals (which I wrote in collaboration with Martin MacLennan and was funded by Paisly First/TH.CARS) and STIGMA – an installation show at Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket Gallery funded by HIV Scotland.

I am always open to collaboration – especially when there’s money involved (those greyhound vet bills are huge), so reach out if you’re interested. As they say in Livingston playgrounds… ‘Don’t be shy! Show us yer pie!” That is about sharing right?
